A care home cook who is leading and learning
After completing the Chef Apprenticeship-Level 4 course with provider Artisan Training, Bupa Beachhaven Care Home Cook Edna Salvatierra has become the leader she always knew she could be.
The Bupa Scholarship funded course has allowed Edna to learn financial, operational and management skills within a care home kitchen environment. She was also updated on employment law and compliance changes that can help her in her position of leading a team of kitchen professionals.
Since beginning her career in food in the Philippines in 1996, Edna says she hasn’t stopped learning, finding the training course a welcome reminder of how important upskilling can be.
“This course has helped to make my dream come true which was to pursue my studies while also working. I found the course mentors really open, encouraging and efficient. The leadership values I learnt have been very good to have,” Edna says.
Bupa Beachhaven Care Home Household Manager Joy Hall says Edna is always looking for new ways to upskill her career and an opportunity to study while working was too good to miss.
“Edna is a favourite amongst the residents and the 100+ meals she has her kitchen prepare each day are of the highest quality and presentation. She has brought back the skills she learnt to Beachhaven and is managing her staff excellently and leading by example,” Joy explains.
