A Journey to Better Health: Ottavio's Story

Download
Summary

Ottavio thought he was in good shape, but a routine health check uncovered what his doctor described a “heart attack waiting to happen”.

Ottavio’s philosophy of a good diet, some exercise and regular check-ups has seen him enjoy good health for most of his 72 years. Like many of us however, during COVID those regular check-ups with his GP got put off.

When the lockdowns were over, Ottavio thought he should have a check-up.

“I had a routine blood test which found my cholesterol levels were a little high. I thought I was in good shape, but the tests were a wake-up call.”

Ottavio had follow-up cardiac tests which showed that he had high levels of calcium in his arteries and that his heart was not pumping enough blood. In fact, his doctors discovered that he had four blocked arteries – two of them were 90% blocked and the other two about 50%.

He was told that he would need quadruple bypass surgery.

"Hearing that I needed major surgery was a shock, but I felt reassured knowing I had the right support," Ottavio recalled.

Within two weeks, Ottavio was booked in for surgery, which was successful. He spent a week in the hospital recovering from the operation.

After returning home, Ottavio received a letter from Bupa about The COACH Program®, which is designed to support people recovering from a cardiovascular event. He admits that he was initially a little sceptical, but decided to give the phone-based health coaching program a try and says he benefited from the specific guidance and encouragement.

"The COACH Program® was a pleasant surprise. It really helped me get back on my feet," he said.

"My family were and are incredible. They were there every step of the way, giving me the strength to keep going.”
