Becoming a good Eco Cityzen

Summary

By Russell Burgess, Communications Manager, Bupa Health Services.

I am an avid runner and make every effort to get out on the streets of Melbourne for an hour of lockdown exercise each day. This has really brought to life how looking after the environment can be linked to looking after yourself.

It’s these beliefs that drove me to participate in Bupa’s eco-Disruptive program that empowers teams to develop sustainable solutions with start-ups.

The program has enabled me to connect with other leaders across the company and do my bit towards making sustainability and the environment something that's part of our DNA as a responsible corporate citizen.

As a participant in the program, I am appreciating the opportunity to not only learn more about the environment and how we can tackle some of these serious ecological challenges but also the chance to work differently using new digital communication tools and techniques for understanding the customer.

The program has had a real focus on identifying customer needs and coming up with solutions to problems that can make a lasting impact.

I am a member of an eco-Disruptive team whose eco-challenge area is all about making our cities and their populations healthier, more sustainable, and resilient.

We are pleased to be partnering with a start-up called PlaySport that is on a mission to build stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities by increasing levels of participation in physical activity.

It's the first online marketplace across the sports, recreation and wellbeing industry – providing an unrivalled digital experience for the community to discover and participate in physical experiences. Their aim is to get 3 million Australians more active in the next 3 years.

We're currently working with PlaySport to map out a joint initiative that gets people off the couch and improving their fitness, wellbeing and social connection through participation in physical experiences.

During these COVID times, getting active and connecting with others is more important than ever, so we're exploring ways in how this can be achieved in a virtual environment and we can’t wait to showcase what we have developed in the coming months.

In the meantime, I will be doing some serious brainstorming on my daily runs.
