Bupa welcomes genetic testing protections
Bupa welcomes policy changes that that will give Australians greater confidence to access their own genetic information to support better health outcomes.
The Treasury Laws Amendment (Genetic Testing Protections in Life Insurance and Other Measures) Bill 2025 will ensure Australians are not deterred from having genetic tests because they are concerned it could affect their access to life insurance.
Bupa believes genomics (the study of our genes) can help deliver more personalised care and better health outcomes and we are making careful investments in this area to create choice for our customers. This includes our pharmacogenomic testing proposition, available to our customers which looks at how an individual’s DNA and genes may affect responses to more than 100 medications.
Importantly, this Bill supports Australia’s shift away from a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach and towards preventive, personalised healthcare for people who choose to use genetic testing to better understand and manage their health.
That is why we were pleased to make a submission to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee supporting the Bill, as we believe it is crucial Australia’s community-rated private health insurance system remains strong, and that people retain control of their own genetic information.
