Fair Work Commission’s interim decision on Aged Care Wages

Summary

We welcome the Fair Work Commission’s interim decision to provide a 15% pay increase for most aged care workers.

This represents a $4 per hour increase for the average carer and is an important first step towards recognition of the critical role our aged care workforce plays in caring for our elderly. We hope this is implemented expeditiously and that it is lifted further in the Commission’s final decision.

However, many of those working in the aged care sector are not eligible for this wage increase, including the chefs, cooks, lifestyle coordinators, and other admin and support staff that are providing critical care and support to people in our homes. We call on the Commission to include all aged care workers – not only carers and nurses – in their final decision.

As the Government has recognised, addressing the significant workforce shortage today and making a career in aged care attractive for the next generation requires a broad suite of reforms and Bupa would welcome the opportunity to contribute.
