Keeping our eyes open to the possibilities
By Adrian Kemp, Director, Bupa Optical & Hearing.
Historically there is a tendency for people to view their healthcare journey in isolation. To mentally silo off the various organs in their body to their specific functions without considering the interplay between these body parts with their broader physical and mental wellbeing… a story that is all too familiar when it comes to our eyes.
After all, eye issues mean a whole lot more than squinting and blurry vision. It can mean:
- Slower development for children
- A negative impact on your employment or education prospects
- Implications on your social life if you are unable to drive or get around independently
- Poor mood or fatigue from constant straining of your eyes
- Something symptomatic of a broader, more dangerous health concern
I have heard first-hand from our wonderful optometrists at Bupa Optical & Hearing about how we have changed lives by prescribing glasses that help people interact with the world in a new light.
But we also hear stories that touch on other serious health situations. For example, one of our Optometrists recently had a customer come in to see her when she noticed unusual symptoms with her vision.
After further investigation, the Optometrist discovered significant visual field loss and made an urgent referral to a neuro-ophthalmologist, as well as the patient’s GP for an MRI, in case the cause was further into the neural pathways of the brain.

It is this potential for life-changing interventions that drives us to invest in the latest technology such as EyeInspect and our exclusive Microvascular Health Assessment tools that use artificial intelligence to assist in the early detection of eye and general health problems such as diabetes and heart disease… and all as part of a customer’s eye -test appointment.
We know optometrists have an important role to play in global wellness, which is why this week during World Optometry Week we pay tribute to the amazing work our, and indeed all, optometrists play in keeping people healthy, happy and living up to their full potential.
