My journey towards Getting Greener

Summary

By Michael Faretta, Head of Risk Management Enablement at Bupa Health Insurance.

If you've been reading or watching the news recently, you'll know that climate change, and our need to act quickly and urgently to address its consequences, is a hot topic.

I am a passionate cyclist, who enjoys being out in nature. It's this appreciation of the outdoors that made me want to be part of our eco-Disruptive challenge and work on initiatives that aim to preserve the natural environment for future generations.

Just recently the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a sobering report about the state of the climate and how our activities are contributing to global warming.

We're seeing the results of our actions (or inaction) with an increase in the number of droughts, fires and floods, as well as the reduction in the amount of usable land and the impact that's having on biodiversity, farming patterns and food production.

I've always been passionate about the environment so it’s great to be part of an organisation like Bupa that is committed to looking for opportunities that can make a difference.

The opportunity to work with like-minded people made me eager to join eco-Disruptive program with some amazing participants across Australia and our global network. Being encouraged to develop sustainable solutions by partnering with start-ups has been really exciting and we've only just scratched the surface of what’s possible in addressing our area of carbon reduction and climate change.

As a result of our work, we are excited to be working with a start-up called Greener, which has developed a marketplace app that helps people find greener options for everything they buy. The interface encourages users to enhance their Greener rating (halo) through lower carbon purchasing, and in turn, enabling the remaining carbon to be offset and become 'carbon neutral'. At its core, it's about encouraging better buyer behaviour.

Our squad is working to show that by being on the Greener app, the perception of a business as a 'green' and environmentally sustainable company can improve. More important is that it can provide added impetus for leaders to institute more sustainable practices within an organisation for the sake of their rating and the health of planet earth.

I feel proud hopeful and am looking forward to what the next few months brings for my team!
