Portraits from the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary

More than 130 portraits of Bupa Ballarat aged care residents now hang in the care home thanks to the talents of physio assistant, Hugo Crystal.

Hugo Crystal, a physio assistant at Bupa Ballarat, found a unique way to keep Bupa Ballarat aged care residents’ spirits up while they haven’t been able to see their loved ones as much as they’d like over the past few months.

With a passion for drawing, Hugo set out to sketch each of the Bupa Ballarat residents. More than 130 of his portraits now hang on the walls at Bupa Ballarat.

Having been in and out of foster homes throughout his childhood, Hugo said the concept of family had been difficult for him, until he started working at the care home. Now he says he counts all 144 residents as his grandparents.
