Taking care of your health in your 30s

Summary

Our 30s are a key time when it comes to looking after our bodies and preventing future health issues.

If you’ve recently turned 31 and don’t have private health insurance, you might have started thinking about whether you need hospital cover to avoid the Government’s Lifetime Health Cover loading, but have you thought about the other benefits it could have on your health, wellbeing and wallet?

While our 30s are often said to be some of the best years of our lives, our bodies will often need a little more attention than our younger carefree 20-something selves.

Perhaps that’s why it’s not surprising to see that osteopath, physiotherapy, chiropractor and remedial massage services were all among the most claimed extras items for Bupa customers aged 30-39 last year. Acupuncture and Exercise Physiology also made the top ten Extras claims.

And with oral health proven to have an important link to overall health, it’s good to see our thirty-something customers keeping up their regular dental check-ups with dental services topping the list of Extras claimed in 2020.

Whether we’re trying to keep up with our younger friends on the netball court or football field, or looking to start a family, it’s an important time to take care of our foundational health for now, and for the future.

When it comes to hospital cover, pregnancy and birth were the highest claims by Bupa customers aged 30-39, with more than half of all mothers giving birth in Australia falling into this age group. Gynaecology and assisted reproductive services were also in the top five.

While taking up healthy habits such as regular exercise and good nutrition can help to prevent some avoidable illnesses or injuries, it’s inevitable we will need healthcare at times. Services relating to the digestive system and cancer treatments were also in the top ten hospital claims for people in their 30s.

In 2020, the top five hospital claims from our customers aged 30-39 were:

  • Pregnancy and birth
  • Psychiatric services
  • Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
  • Gynaecology
  • Assisted reproductive services

In 2020, the top five Extras claims from our customers aged 30-39 were:

  • Dental
  • Chiropractor and Osteopath
  • Physiotherapy
  • Optical
  • Remedial Massage

Along with offering more choice and control over your healthcare, having hospital cover could help you avoid the Government’s Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading.
