Meet Melanie: a carer at Bupa Aged Care Caulfield

Melanie shares what it is about her job as a carer at Bupa Caulfield that keeps her feeling fulfilled and inspired.

I have been here for 7 years and I love spending time with the residents. There is one person I look after who is experiencing depression (not pictured), she prefers to have her curtain closed but I always encourage her to open it so she can see the light.

Since then, I have noticed a positive change in her mood. We make each other happy and that’s a good thing. I always make sure that she’s kept busy so I can help keep her mind off things. Without this kind of work, I don’t know where I’d be.

The job can be overwhelming at times, especially because I lost my husband 4 years ago and I know that if I didn’t get out of the house and keep myself busy at that time, I would've experienced a similar kind of depression.

When you lose a loved one, and you have no one else around, you don’t know how to stand up but I have a lot of support here from the residents and staff which helps me to stay on my feet.
