Health boost for The Big Issue vendors

Summary

As Australia braces for a challenging flu season, vendors of The Big Issue will receive free flu vaccinations from Bupa's Wellness Nurses to help them keep healthy during winter.

As part of a long-term partnership, Bupa has provided flu vaccinations to The Big Issue vendors across Australia since 2018. This year, vaccinations will be delivered at The Big Issue sites in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

Bupa Asia Pacific Acting CEO, Nick Stone, said the program was developed in recognition of the challenges of accessing healthcare, including vaccinations for people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.

“The Big Issue does admirable work in creating work opportunities for people going through difficult times,” Mr Stone said.

“We’re proud of the work our nurses undertake to support the wellbeing of The Big Issue vendors through this flu vaccination program. This is one small way we can help support people experiencing disadvantage to achieve better health outcomes, and we look forward to continuing our support for this amazing organisation.”

CEO of The Big Issue Steven Persson said the vaccination program is important for those on the margins.

“This is the sixth year Bupa has provided vaccinations for our vendors, and we are grateful for their ongoing support,” Mr Persson said.

“Having access to free vaccinations helps The Big Issue community be safe and well and is invaluable as those experiencing disadvantage often do not have the same access to healthcare and resources as other Australians.”

Bupa encourages Australians to purchase a copy of The Big Issue to support vendor livelihoods if they are able and to make an appointment to receive their own flu vaccination to protect their own health with flu-related hospitalisation rates expected to increase on 2022 figures[1].
